Quality, Costs, and Accessibility
Is it that simple?
💡 Those are 3 simple words that drive spine care right now (and most of healthcare), but they seem to have a million definitions.
🛑 What appears to be a straightforward trio of principles guiding care becomes increasingly complex upon deeper examination.
This is much more than a policy debate…
❓ Can we truly deliver improving surgical outcomes without driving up costs?
❓ Can we expand access to care without compromising safety or innovation?
Quality of Care:
✅ We still do not know how to best measure this across hospital systems and practices — in terms of what is most “meaningful”
1️⃣ What is the best combination of patient reported outcomes and objective data?
2️⃣ Which wearable technology is most practical and effective?
3️⃣ Is there something we are completely missing?
Cost of Care:
✅ Cost to whom? Each stakeholder has their own priorities. The incentives of individuals within the same system may vary widely.
1️⃣ The “system”?
2️⃣ The insurance companies? (for-profit organizations)
3️⃣ The patient? (This should be the most important, right? And by the way, we are all patients…)
4️⃣ Time/savings lost?
5️⃣ These are just some of the many cost bearers… keep listing…
Accessibility:
1️⃣ Even with insurance, high deductibles, co-pays, and out-of-pocket costs create significant hurdles. Who truly bears the burden of affordability?
2️⃣ Advanced enabling technologies promise better outcomes, but are they being deployed equitably, or only in well-funded centers?
3️⃣ The role of insurance and prior authorizations—are financial structures limiting timely care?
⚠️ We do not want to further marginalize populations that are already marginalized!
🧠 As the demand for spine care rises and economic pressures mount, we are left with a fundamental question: **Is it possible to optimize all three— or must one always come at the expense of the others?**
⁉️ Where do we go from here?
Thats not the question I struggle with the most…
These are the 2:
1️⃣ What can we do as front-line works to drive this type of change in a meaningful manner? Our efforts seem to be fragmented at times
2️⃣ In a world that is trying to consolidate and “simplify” — does our healthcare system seem to be trending even more complex?
